This report, “Understanding the Municipal Solid Waste Crisis in Mansheyat Dahshur”, presents a comprehensive study conducted by Greenish and North South Consultants Exchange (NSCE), aiming to diagnose the waste management challenges in this semi-rural village in Giza, Egypt.
Over a 36-day period, the research team engaged in a diverse set of field activities: waste characterization, segregation trials, land usage mapping, questionnaires, interviews, and animal behavior monitoring to uncover the roots of the plastic pollution crisis and inefficient waste practices. The findings revealed significant volumes of uncollected household waste (9.6 tonnes daily), high dependence on open dumping and burning, and direct waste disposal into irrigation canals.
